The Northeast Florida Association of REALTORS® is assisting with a historic state-wide petition campaign to place a constitutional amendment regarding affordable housing on the 2022 General Election ballot.

The state-wide petition drive, which was initiated by Florida Realtors®, started June 28, and has a goal of collecting 1 million signatures by Friday, December 31.

Petitions are available for members to sign online at housingfunds4housing.org or here. NEFAR staff members will also have them available at Area Council Social events, or in the lobby of the NEFAR Resource Center. Members are encouraged to print off the petitions so that their office colleagues can sign them. NEFAR will happily take care of the postage and mailing of the petitions. Just collect them and drop them off at one of the following locations:

During the past 20 years, the Florida legislature has funded several unrelated projects from the Sadowski Funds, state trust funds earmarked for affordable housing that are funded by real estate documentary stamps. The amount of money diverted from these funds is more than $2 billion.

The goal of the petition drive is to make the process more accountable. By signing the petition, REALTORS® are requesting that Florida citizens have an opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment that will ensure these important affordable housing funds can only be used for affordable housing, and nothing else.

If the amendment makes its way onto the ballot in 2022 and is approved, it guarantees that the portion of the taxes charged on documents like deeds and mortgages will only be used to make homes and apartments safer and more affordable for seniors, low-income, and moderate-income Florida residents. The intended purpose of these funds has always been that they be used for housing programs, not non-housing projects as they have been for the past two decades.

To encourage REALTORS® throughout the state to sign the petition, Florida Realtors® has launched a competition between the state’s REALTOR® associations – small, medium, large, and mega) to see who can collect the most signatures. The association that collects the most member signatures within each category wins a $5,000 advocacy grant. The competition ends Friday, November 19.

So, vote YES for the amendment to make sure these funds only go to affordable housing projects— but first, sign the petition to ensure the amendment gets on the ballot!
