Tyrone Power Townsend
1948 - 2021
It is with great sadness that the Northeast Florida Association of REALTORS® has learned that long-time NEFAR member Tyrone Power Townsend has passed away. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21 at Bethel Baptist Church Downtown, 215 Bethel Baptist, in Jacksonville, 32202. Viewing will be held at the same location, one hour prior to the service.
A REALTOR® for 31 years, Mr. Townsend worked at the Walter Williams Coldwell Banker Realty in the 1980s. On January 1, 2012, he signed on with Watson Realty Corporation. He most recently worked out of Watson’s office on Sunbeam Road. In 2017, Mr. Townsend achieved over $3 million in closed production volume and achieved Watson’s President’s Award. Mr. Townsend was a man who will long be remembered for his ever-present smile and the fact that he always brought Watson’s corporate office refrigerator magnet calendars at Christmas time.
Mr. Townsend was also a member of the Southside Business Men’s Club, and in 1995 he was elected as its first African-American president. During his tenure with the club, he created the “Kids’ Shopping Spree” in the mid-1980s, and this Christmas charity work for disadvantaged Southside children continued for nearly three decades. For the first several years, K-Mart opened its doors to the club and the children. In 2003, the club initiated a formal relationship with Target’s Mandarin store to assist in fulfilling the Christmas dreams of many underprivileged children in Jacksonville. Also, during Mr. Townsend’s presidency in 1995, the Southside Business Men’s Club adopted Treaty Oak Park on the Southbank at the City’s request and planted a splendid rose garden, according to the club’s website.
