About NEFAR Government Affairs

The Northeast Florida Association of Realtors is an active participant in the public policy and political affairs arena. Through the Association's Government Affairs department, NEFAR members are kept informed on policy issues affecting the real estate industry at all levels of government.

Working in conjunction with the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and the Florida Realtors, the department coordinates promotion of the Realtor position on legislation at the national and state level. Locally, the department monitors current and proposed regulation and works with NEFAR's Legislative Committee to develop and promote the Realtor position within the community. Coordinating Realtor's grassroots efforts, the department alerts members to respond to Calls to Action to support lobbying strategies through the NAR Realtor Action Center, FAR Grassroots Action Center and the NEFAR Legislative Action Network.

NEFAR's political affairs involvement includes an extensive Candidate Screening program and local "Get Out the Vote" efforts. Through the Candidate Screening Task Force, NEFAR works to promote election of candidates who support the free enterprise system, private property rights and the real estate industry. The committee interviews candidates for public office and recommends candidates to the Board of Directors for NEFAR support and to the RPAC trustees for RPAC campaign contributions. Through this process, NEFAR also establishes relationships with current and future elected officials.

Through the NEFAR Legislative Action Network, NEFAR members are informed about candidates recommended by NEFAR and encouraged to support those candidates on election days. The Government Affairs Department reminds members of upcoming elections, encourages voter registration and provides early voting information.

The success of Realtors' public advocacy efforts depends on member participation and, in large part, on the strength of the Realtors Political Action Committee (RPAC). There are numerous methods of rewarding (and often enjoyable) ways that you can contribute your time and energy towards protecting the real estate industry, including:

  • attending the Florida Realtors Annual Great American Realtor Days in Tallahassee
  • participating in Capitol Hill Congressional Visits in Washington, D.C.
  • serving on NEFAR's Legislative Committee and/or Candidate Screening Task Force
  • working on political campaigns
  • helping with issue advocacy and direct lobbying
  • serving on local government boards or task forces
  • attending meetings with community leaders
  • serving as a Key Contact or team member for a United States Congressman, State Legislator, County Commissioner or City Councilperson
  • contributing to RPAC

NEFAR's Government Affairs department facilitates NEFAR's RPAC fundraising efforts. In addition to hosting fundraising events, NEFAR works to educate members about the importance of contributing to RPAC and promotes participation and recognition of those members who qualify for major donor status under the NAR and/or Florida Realtor programs.
